Upcoming Asterisk 1.0.9 build and Installation Package

Asterisk 1.0.9 has now reached release candidate status for a new OSX installation package after succesful tests on MacOS X versions 10.3.9 ("Panther") through to 10.4.3 ("Tiger"). Please check this page for updates.

Asterisk 1.0.7 build for MacOS X versions 10.3 and 10.4

Prior to public availability of the Asterisk 1.0.9 build, the previous test build based on Asterisk 1.0.7 is available for download as a tarball which contains an installation and upgrade script. This build has been released in April 2005 and it has since been tested and proven to be reliable on both MacOS X 10.3 ("Panther") and MacOS X 10.4 ("Tiger") in hundreds of installations. It will run on MacOS X 10.3.8, 10.3.9, 10.4, 10.4.1 and 10.4.2.

The MD5 checksum for this tarball is 6f6d6cd5777666a6ca078cdcd3bcb1b0.

  • Pre-1.0 build for MacOS X versions 10.2.8 and 10.3

In addition, a now outdated MacOS X installation package which was based on Asterisk CVS-28/10/03 works with MacOS X version 10.2.8 (and 10.3) and is still available for download here.

The CVS-28/10/03 release is not being maintained any further and any bug reports related to it will be ignored. It has neither been tested nor is it recommended for use with MacOS X 10.4 ("Tiger"). Mac users running MacOS X 10.3 or 10.4 are advised to use the Asterisk 1.0.7 build instead.

Uninstalling Asterisk and making a backup of an Asterisk configuration

The tarball installers come with three shell scripts to install and uninstall Asterisk and to make a backup of your Asterisk configuration, log files etc. These shell scripts are also available as a separate download.

  • Asterisk and the MacOS X GUI

Asterisk is a faceless Unix server application which runs as a background process (daemon). The Asterisk server application consists of a variety of files which are installed in the BSD layer of MacOS X, it does not have an application icon and it will not show up in the /Applications folder in the Finder. It also does not have a graphical user interface. For front end applications to control and configure Asterisk from the MacOS X GUI see:

  • Asterisk Launcher
  • Asterisk Assistants
  • An integrated Asterisk GUI application for MacOS X is also under development:

  • Asterisk Support for Apple's Voice Modems

We are working on a voice modem channel driver for the Motorola SM56 modem used by Apple in recent Macs and in the external Apple USB Modem. This will allow Asterisk to use the modem for answering machine and IVR applications. The channel driver is scheduled for release with the upcoming new installation package.

    Asterisk AppleScripts

The Asterisk AppleScripts are a collection of clickable AppleScript script applets for basic control of Asterisk, such as start, stop and reload, further to set and query some of the entities in Asterisk's internal database.
