Unicall Support for MacOS X

Cross-platform device driver API for telephony interfaces

Unicall is a vendor-independent hardware abstraction layer library for telephony interfaces. It is based on the call model of ISDN and SS7 supporting a broad range of telephony interface technologies, reaching from analog telephony devices to T1/E1 interfaces for primary rate ISDN.

The Unicall library is cross-platform and open source. However, device drivers are vendor and platform specific. In order to interface between the Unicall driver API and a given device driver, a conduit may be needed to translate between Unicall and the vendor specific driver API.

In late 2005 we initiated the Unicall Support for MacOS X Project and we have since fostered this project through our open source community Astmasters.net. The aim of the project is to allow the use of telephony interface hardware on MacOS X through Unicall. The following initial deliverables are on our to do list:

  • a conduit to interface between Unicall and Apple's device driver for the Apple USB modem
  • a MacOS X device driver for a BRI ISDN interface which conforms to the Unicall driver API
  • Work is currently under way to make it easier to interface between Unicall and Apple's modem device driver. We still need volunteers to contribute to the development of the required conduit software. The conduit software will make it possible to use one or more Apple USB modems (retail $49 at the Apple Store) as a PSTN line interface to connect one or more analog telephone lines to Asterisk and OpenPBX on MacOS X.

    Donations & Sponsorships Needed

We are now soliciting donations and corporate sponsorships to fund the development of the conduit software to interface between Unicall and Apple's USB modem driver. The software will be released under an open source license, free of charge. Sunrise will take on project ownership and project manage the development.

We are also asking interested parties, especially telephony interface hardware vendors, to consider sponsoring the development of Unicall API conforming MacOS X device driver software for USB/PCI based BRI ISDN interfaces and PCI based PRI ISDN interface cards.

    Donations

If you would like to use Asterisk on a Macintosh computer and have Asterisk or OpenPBX directly utilise the built-in modem or one or more Apple USB modems to connect to one or more analog telephone lines, please make a donation.

    Thank you.

    Sponsorships

If your company will benefit from the availability of MacOS X Unicall drivers for BRI or T1/E1 PRI interface cards, please contact us for a corporate sponsorship. In addition to the availability of drivers, sponsors will benefit from visibility through promotions on our open source community website at Astmasters.net, such as banner ads, dedicated space on a sponsors page and editorial visibility.

    About Asterisk™

Asterisk™ is a complete PBX telephone exchange in software, originally developed for Linux by Mark Spencer of Digium and released under the General Public License (GPL). Asterisk™ provides all of the features you would expect from a PBX and more. It does voice over IP (VoIP) supporting multiple protocols, and it can interoperate with almost all standards-based telephony equipment using relatively inexpensive hardware.
